1. What is a GFCI? a. A GFCI receptacle differs from conventional receptacles. In the event of a ground fault, a GFCI will quickly trip and stop the flow of electricity to prevent serious injury. b. A ground fault occurs when electricity deviates from its normal safe path and passes through a person's body to reach the ground. For example, a defective appliance can cause a ground fault. c. A GFCI receptacle does not protect against circuit overload, short circuits, or shocks. You can still be shocked if you touch bare wires while standing on a non-conducting surface, such as a wood floor.

2. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Outlets a. Self-Testing Function: The self-test feature is important because it can detect if the GFCI is miswired. If it is miswired, the GFCI cannot be reset, and the green indicator LED will be on, which may prevent personal injury or death due to a ground fault (electrical shock). If the LINE wire is mistakenly connected to the LOAD terminals, it will not provide power to either the outlet of the GFCI or the load terminal fed through the GFCI. b. 3. How to Install Step 1: Strip the insulating layer off the front end of the wire to expose the copper wire. Step 2: Push the wire through the back-wire hole at the top and tighten the screw clockwise. Caution: Do not tighten the screw anticlockwise. Self-testing Safety Operation: The GFCI has LED light status indicators, self-testing features, and a reset lockout. To operate, it has two buttons: a test button that cuts the flow of electricity and a reset button that restores power.
